As part of the Zoning Division, Zoning was created to promote and protect the public health, safety, and general welfare of the Hartville Community by enforcing the zoning regulations. It is also responsible for approving temporary signs, banners, and fence permits, as well as reviewing all building and development plans.

Code Enforcement Requests
To make a Code Enforcement Request about tall grass, inoperable vehicles, junk/trash, fences/structures without permits or other items, please contact the Zoning Department at 330.877.9222.

Closely related are the Planning Commission - responsible for interpreting and maintaining the zoning regulations - and the Board of Zoning Appeals - resolving issues between residents and the zoning regulations.

Zoning Applications & Requirements

Zoning Permit
A Zoning Permit needs to be issued for a new home, twinplex/duplex, storage shed deck, garages, room addition, fences, above and inground pools.

All Zoning Permits must accompany a drawing with the dimensions of the property, the general location of the home, location of the new structure - distances indicated to the rear and side property lines. The dimensions of the structure must be clearly indicated!

Sign Permit
A Sign Permit needs to be issued for any new sign, or changes to an existing sign. The permit is for that location only (can't be moved to another location without another permit.) Two drawings of the sign are needed - one showing the positioning on the property and/or building; and one showing the front view of the sign with wording and dimensions.


Report a Concern:

Zoning Complaint Form must be used to record and report possible zoning violations or concerns related to any zoning issue you observe. Please mail or return this form to the Zoning Department at 202 W. Maple Street, Hartville, Ohio 44632.

Keeping Down Weeds
Any person owning or having charge of land within the municipality shall keep such property must cut and destroy all noxious weeds or overgrown grass per our Weed Ordinance.  

The following Ordinance 01-09.22 pertains to those who may fail to comply with the Weed Resolution.

Maintenance of Dwellings
The Village requires the maintenance of dwellings, structures and features to ensure they are being used in the way they were intended.  Ordinance 01-16.27

 

Most Common Violations in Residential Areas 
Overgrown grass and weeds:  Grass and weeds must be maintained at a height of 8 inches or less.

Structures in disrepair:  Accessory structures such as sheds, fences, doors, windows and roofing, must be maintained in good repair.

Vehicles:  Motor vehicles and trailers on your property must be operable and have up-to-date registration, or if non-operable shall be parked or stored on any residential proerty other than in a completely enclosed building.

Debris and junk:  The yard should be free of debris, miscellaneous junk, branches, et.  Appliances and bulk items such as stoves, refrigerators, furniture and tires, are considered debris and must not be left out on the property.

Swimming pools:  ALL pools capable of holding 18" minimum depth of water require a zoning and building permit.  All pools must meet strict requirements including fencing, self-latching gate and if applicable, electrical standards.
